Avocado is a bit of a luxury here, and guacamole is an absolute delicacy. Because of its specialness, our guacamole is really just mashed avocado with seasonings added: lemon juice, salt and pepper, and sometimes onion. That’s about it. If we have a few people, then it becomes a full-blown appetiser with some celery and tomato to add some interest.
And it’s perfect for a party starting with appetisers.
In her Mooswood Cookbook, Mollie Katzen tells us that you can add capsicum, finely minced onion, cucumber, tomato, egg and even some finely chopped olives to that basic mix. Some people also add sour cream or yoghurt, but we prefer to keep the dairy-free delicacy completely dairy free.
By the way, it’s worth saving the avocado seed for other uses. It’s high in potassium, so we let it dry and grind it to a fine powder for adding to smoothies and the like.
Guacamole
Ingredients
- 1 avocado
- 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
- salt and pepper to taste
- chilli or Tabasco sauce (optional)
- very finely chopped onion
Directions
Scoop the avocado flesh out of the shell, then mash it up with the lemon juice, salt, pepper and Tabasco sauce. Gently fold in other ingredients to suit your family’s tastebuds.
This is so simple and sounds very delicious… I can’t wait to try this recipe sometime soon. Keep your post because they are remarkable. Cheers, cyber-veggie.

Thanks so much. It is simple, but because of the price of avocados here, it’s not something we do a lot. I love your little carrot avatar by the way. it’s great.

Avocados are so cheap here in Australia at the moment and I don’t really like store brought food as much as homemade so this will be great. This the type of content my blog is going for. I think your blog is awesome. I hope you can enjoy this delight more often. Cheers, cyber-veggie.

Avocado on toast – that’s how my husband’s family used to have it – smothered with so much lemon juice and salt you couldn’t taste the avocado any more!

Well, try this one, and then make yours, and we can all try that. Everyone has slightly different tastes in these things, and it’s always fun to try new twists on old favourites.

Another Moosewood fan! I’m slowly going through the collection and picking out the best recipes. My plan is to eventually donate the books to my mum.

Guacamole is a favourite of ours too. I use any leftover bits of the avocado for a face cream, but I never thought of drying the seed. Thanks for planting that idea for me.

You know, I’d never really done much with avocado until I met my avocado-loving husband. He didn’t need a recipe for guacamole. I did though 🙂 Have fun with the seeds.

Face cream? I’ve never tried that use for avocado. Do you mix it with anything?

Well, you could, but I don’t. It makes a lovely moisturizer. You might be interested in taking a peek at this post:
